While most person with diabetess are required to take medication to control their blood sugar and reduce the risk of other health conditions, you can often reverse type II diabetes if you lose weight and learn to eat healthfully. Following some basic diet and exercise strategies can also prevent a pre-person with diabetes or someone at risk from developing type II diabetes.

Sugar Control

Instead of waiting for diabetes to strike fully or relying upon medication entirely, you have to start controlling your own blood sugar. This means cutting out refined white sugar as much as possible. Eating a lot of cookies, cakes, sugary drinks, and other sugary foods is what leads up to diabetes, but great things can be accomplished by cutting them out.

White refined carbohydrates act very much like sugar inside your body and should be replaced with whole grain or whole wheat options. At the very least, eat smaller portions of refined white carbs and combine them with lean sources of protein.

If you have a sweet tooth, go for naturally sweet fruit instead of sugary treats and combine it with protein, such as fruit cocktail and cottage cheese. Apples are also excellent options which do not need to be eaten in any special combination.

Keep a Routine

Make sure you are eating on a consistent basis throughout the day so your blood sugar doesn't crash. This will not only help control your blood sugar, but it will help you lose weight since it keeps your metabolism high and ensures you from feeling full between meals. The high fiber content in whole grains will also keep you full!

Hold the Fat

In order to control blood sugar and other health factors, you need to control the amounts and types of fat you put into your body. Don't try to eliminate fat altogether, but try to stay away from partially hydrogenated oils, saturated fats, and trans fat.

Since many processed pre-packaged foods contain those ingredients today, you will have to find more natural options to completely control or prevent diabetes. Nuts and natural peanut or almond butter are great alternatives!

Get Moving

Exercise is extremely important if you are worried about diabetes. Diet and exercise go hand in hand to control your weight, but exercise will change everything about your body. Just get up and get moving in some small way right now, even if it is just a short walk down the block. You will be going greater distances and controlling your health before you know it!

Toughen Up

Besides getting out for walks or using fitness equipment in your living room to burn excess calories and boost metabolism, you have to do some type of strength training on a regular basis. The more muscle you have in your body the more fat you will burn, the less you will weigh, and the healthier you will be inside and out!

By not focusing on sticking with a diet and focusing more on healthy eating habits, you will find the results you desire and will be able to maintain them for life. Tips For A Successful Diet

Stay away from fried things. Fried things are an absolute no-no. The more fried things that you avoid, the lesser weight you will gain. Fried things are called so because they are fried in oil or fat. And even if the external oil is
drained away, there is still a lot of hidden oil in it so stay away from it.

Do not skip meals. The worst thing you can do while watching you diet is skip a meal. It has just the opposite effect of what you want. You need to have at least four regular meals every day.

Fresh vegetables are better than cooked or canned vegetables. Try to eat our vegetables raw. When you cook them, you are in fact taking away nearly half the vitamins in them. And canned vegetables too are processed and are not nearly half as good as fresh vegetables. When you buy your vegetables it would be a good thing to see if the label says that it is pesticide free.

Do not eat more than an egg a day. Eggs are not such a bright idea. It would be best to reduce your intake of eggs to maybe three in a week. But for those of you die hard egg fans, you may have up to one egg a day but nothing more than that.

Make chocolates a luxury and not a routine. Chocolates are not or at least they should not be a part of your diet. So do not indulge too much in them. Even the bitter chocolates are not good for you because though the sugar is less there is still the cream in them.

Choose a variety of foods from all food groups every day. This is a fine way of keeping deficiency diseases at bay. Change the items included in your diet every day. This is an excellent way of keeping deficiency diseases at bay and it helps you to experiment with a variety of dishes and there by you do not get bored of your diet.

If you can say no to alcoholic beverages please do. Alcoholic beverages too are not good for you. Beer can be fattening and the rest of the alcoholic drinks may not be fattening by themselves but after a couple of swigs you will be in no position to watch your diet and your appetite too will be something to battle with.

Try to have breakfast within one hour of waking. It's always best to have breakfast within an hour of waking so that your body can charge itself with the energy it needs for the day. The idea is not to wait for your self to get really hungry. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day but that does not mean that it should be the most filling meal of the day.

Have you ever experienced this scenario before?

"I have successfully lost 15 of the 25 pounds that I want to lose, but now I am stuck at the same weight even though I am faithfully controlling my food intake and doing my exercises. What happened? Is the diet not working anymore?"

Yes, many women over 40 start off their weight loss programs full of excitement and determination, and indeed you do see the pounds dropping off over the first few weeks.

That's great, of course.

However, the next thing you know is that your progress has come to a dead stop...

...and you have just hit the dreaded weight loss "plateau."

But don't despair -- you are _not_ the only one experiencing this.

Hitting a plateau is a common experience for most women over 40 on a weight loss program.

And it can be one of the most de-motivating things to happen.

Thankfully, overcoming it is easy... IF you know the simple steps you can take.

Today, I'm going to show you some very simple and specific steps you can take to overcome your plateaus:

1. Be careful of the little things: It's easy to lapse into complacency over time, so I suggest that you keep a food diary. Writing down what you eat each day can help you to spot those times when you might be taking in more food than you realize. A little snack here and there can (and will) add up to a lot of extra calories.

2. It may not be the food: Sometimes, it's not the food per se that is the cause of the plateau. For example, work or family stress may be the culprit instead. Stress can cause you to want to go dig into that tub of chocolate ice cream. If you are feeling stressed, it's important to acknowledge it right now, and go find some other forms of relief other than reaching out for more (typically unhealthy) food. Go take a walk, listen to music or play with your dog instead!

3. Start off on the right foot: You got to eat something for breakfast every day. Not only will you start the day with your stomach feeling satisfied, eating breakfast actually kick starts your metabolism so that you'll burn more calories throughout the day.

4. Eat more often: Instead of eating 3 big regular meals each day, opt to have 5 smaller meals. After you eat, your body releases the hormone insulin, which causes your body to store fat. The larger the meal, the more insulin your body releases. But smaller, more frequent meals keep insulin levels lower and more stable. The less insulin you have in your blood, the more fat you burn, and the less you store.

5. Try water first: If you're feeling "hungry," try drinking a glass of water first before you go grab something to much on. Sometimes we confuse thirst for hunger, and end up eating more food unnecessarily. If the water doesn't make that hunger pang go away, you can always grab something to eat later. And the bonus is that the water would have helped you to feel fuller, so you don't have to eat as much!

6. Avoid snacks at night: After you've had your dinner, do not snack or eat supper. And never ever eat just before you go to bed. Take it from Oprah -- she says that one of her secrets to her successful weight loss is that she does not eat anything after 7:30pm... not even a grape.

7. Try a weekly one-day "cleanse": Choose 1 day in the week to cleanse your system by taking only vegetable juices. And please use fresh vegetable juices if you can, and avoid the canned stuff that are chock-full of sodium or added sugars!

Apply these 7 simple steps and you too will be able to overcome those plateaus easily.

I have now lost 25 pounds!"

...It was not easy. It is hard to change twenty-six years of bad habits. But I was dedicated to the Healing Diet, and the results I have seen are nothing short of miraculous. In just over thirty days, I had lost 15 pounds. I was sleeping better at nights. I was no longer in pain. I was down to one small sore on the inside of my leg. My insulin usage was down almost by half, and my insulin resistance was much better. My blood pressure was no longer high. In a few words, I was doing better than I had in almost twenty years!

Remember, I came into this as a skeptic. I did not expect this to work at all. But it did. And that is the bottom line. After medical science told me that there was nothing more to do, I tried one more desperate thing. And it paid off. I now have a new lease on life. I am getting married in August, and, for the first time in my life, I am not worried about starting a family. I had always been scared that I would be dead before I could see my kids graduate, or get married, or have children of my own.
